Improving gas flow and improving DP by lowering internal resistance

THE OBJECTIVE

An Aluminium smelter in Middle East approached SOLAFT to find a way to lower differential pressure, fan electricity consumption and pulsing frequency in their existing installation. They were also looking for more alumina recirculation in the fume treatment plant.

THE ISSUE

After one and a half years of operation, the plant was operating at extremely high differential pressure, and not achieving its desired outcome with standard ESBs. Investigations by SOLAFT confirmed there was a need to minimise internal resistance of the filter bag.

WHAT WE DID AND THE SOLUTION

SOLAFT suggested the newly design, PrimaFlow™, a revolutionary combination of proprietary filter bag, cage and customised filtration media, as the next generation of ESBs. The aerodynamic design allowed for lower internal gas flow resistance, reducing pressure drop along filter bag length.

OUTCOME

After a successful trialling, the benefits PrimaFlow™ when compared against the existing ESBs:

  • Reduction in pressure drop compared to the existing compartments in operation, even at a higher gas flow
  • 30% lower DP after offline cleaning
  • 16% lower operational DP at max flow
  • Reverse pulse cleaning interval 64% lower

When compared to the DP of conventional round filters, PrimaFlow™ was 40% lower. Operational savings were achieved in induction fan electricity use and longer filter bag life.
